Personal Home, Ancestral Lineage

The IC, also known as the ‘imum coeli’ (Latin: the bottom of the heavens), is the lowest point in our birth chart and a symbolic representation of our home, ancestry, and roots. The IC is closely tied to the symbolism of the fourth house and is positioned at the exact opposite end of the Midheaven or MC.

The IC’s sign reveals clues about our experience of our early home environment, and the type of caretaking and support parental figures have supplied. This emotional imprint often shapes the type of home base we need to create for ourselves in order to feel comfortable and tends to describe our home-building habits as adults. How have our father and mother impacted our idea of home? How and where do we feel at home and how we we create a sense of home for ourselves? What do we know of our ancestral lineage? On a deeper level, the IC denotes not only our ancestral roots, but those aspects of the accumulated history and evolution of the human race which reside within us. It can be a place, quality of being or specific action which forms an important keystone, personal foundation, or has a grounding effect on us.

Technically speaking, the IC is the point on the ecliptic which intersects with the observer’s meridian below the horizon. Forcing us to look ‘beneath’ us, the IC can carry a powerful ancestral ‘charge’, describing blocked parental goals or generational themes and trauma. What our parents have denied or suppressed and what they would have liked to become or experienced if they had had the opportunity can be projected onto us, leaving a subconscious yet powerful trail of expectation that we internalise and gradually begin to embody.

The IC in the Birth Chart

Here we find a qualitative description of the atmosphere present in our childhood home — did we grow up with a sense of adventure, overbearing nurturing, or a focus on deep connection? Any planets close to the IC strongly contribute to our early perceptions of home, safety and family, and aspects to the IC deepen this analysis, showing potential gifts and challenges we experience around these themes.
