Uranus’s Mythological Meaning

In Greek mythology, Ouranos is the son and husband of Earth goddess Gaia. Although he fathered many children, he hated all of them and stuffed them back into Gaia’s womb as soon as she had given birth, burying them deep down into the earth. Gaia suffered and conspired with her youngest son Cronos (Saturn) to castrate his father. Successful in their conspiracy, Ouranos’s severed genitals were flung into the sea, from the foam of which emerged Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. Ouranos’s brutal fate, a symbolic severance of sky from earth, male from female, conscious from unconscious and intellect from instinct, leads to the association of the planet with both disruption and connection.
