The Magician: Archetype & Symbolism
This card is a symbol for manifestation, power of mind, and crystal clear intentionality, achieved through laser focus and faith in the best outcome. Achieving the optimal outcome in a situation never requires force, only finesse of action. Do you have faith in positive outcomes? Can you allocate the right resources to reach your goals? Do you generally manifest your visions? Channeling the meticulous and exploratory energy of Virgo, Gemini and the planet Mercury, the Magician teaches us how, using the four elements.
The Magician knows how to do magic, which means nothing other than the power to change reality. To do this, you must first understand how the world — the physical plane — works. This means understanding the four elements: water, fire, earth and air. The earth element represents physical demands — facts, workability, realness, competence, objects. The water element comprises mood, collective trends, feelings, emotions, storytelling. The fire element is our urge to move, inner passion, sense of agency. The air element is the mind - thoughts, beliefs and expectations, which can be changed with dedication and prioritisation to change. Together, they come together and create the fifth element — Ether, or magic, or the sacredness to live. When you master these elements, you master yourself. The earth element asks you: are you realistic, pragmatic, can you put food on the table and make enough money to keep a roof over your head? Water asks if you are sensitive enough to understand your feelings and aware enough to control them. Are your relationships harmonious and fulfilling? Fire asks if you have enough passion and freedom to act on your desires. Is your purpose well defined? Air wants to know if you cultivate adequate thought hygiene. Are you glowing, healthy, with immaculate thought hygiene and excellent mental health? If this is the case, you have mastered the tremendously demanding aspects of physicality, and you can dedicate yourself to the study of magic.
The Magician: Advice, Lesson & Higher Wisdom
The Magician has a difficult job: to shift the most dense and slow form of reality. This is the reality that we as humans inhabit - the Earth plane. His power of manifestation is a testament to his clarity of mind: only those acutely aware of and in control of their thoughts will master physical reality. The Magician has mastered this, and as a result, can make things occur and bring ideas into form.Like the Magician, each one of us has the ability to do magic, yet magic depends upon two things: creating a sacred atmosphere within which the laws of magic work, and having clear intentionality. Do you believe in sacredness? Do you embody vitality and life force? You must believe in the power of magic for it to work, and be convinced with every cell that you possess this power. Create sacredness in your atmosphere. Introduce clear-minded thought and intentionality into your world. Cultivate an atmosphere of magic.
The Magician’s power over the Earth plane is only a metaphor: this card’s purpose is to question and test whether what we have in our minds, which is inevitably reflected in our reality. As above, so below. Ask yourself: is your philosophy of life workable, is it consistent? Most people do not have a consistent philosophy - they believe two thing which are mutually exclusive, and enact many versions of pairings of opposites. On the physical plane, this cannot be reconciled because things either work or they don’t. Are the principles and practices you adhere to lies, deceptions, or illusions? Or are they workable? Do you believe in the light at the end of the tunnel when a situation is difficult? “I am free to be who I am” whatever the circumstances — that is faith.
