Return To Source

As the last house in the circle, the twelfth house is where we face endings, surrender to the greater tides of life and offer ourselves up to universal service. This ambiguous space symbolises both womb and tomb —  the mystery of life before life and beyond death. Here, we seek wholeness and boundlessness and yearn to return to the perfect state of oneness pre-birth to access the Source, hoping to lose our lonely separateness and merge with something universal. Only the ego finds the prospect of its loss and disintegration terrifying.

Personal Dreams, Collective Ambitions

Central twelfth house themes are retreat, refuge, and withdrawal. Dazing, murky, and obscure, this is the opium den of all houses, where nothing is as it seems — here we encounter visions, dreams, hidden things and mystical experiences. Home to both the personal and the collective unconscious, this house is a doorway to the transpersonal, allowing us lose our sense of self as a separate individual, develop a profound sense of compassion, and understand that everything is interconnected. Yet this is easier said than done — many of us settle for intoxication, oblivion, and escapism through other means instead.

Power and Self-Undoing

Traditionally associated with hospitals, monasteries, asylums, prisons and institutions, we sometimes require isolating environments to remove ourselves from our ordinary life and mundane reality. Sanctuary, stillness, contemplation and occasional seclusion can be a blessing to tap into our intuition and unconscious. Tremendously difficult to get hold of, yet immensely powerful, the unconscious holds hidden treasures — it is our task to channel these demons into gifts of self-empowerment, not self-undoing. As Raine Maria Rilke wrote, ‘perhaps all our dragons are really princesses, just waiting to see us once brave and beautiful’.

Planets In The Twelfth House

The sign on the cusp of our twelfth house and any planets therein describe how we seek recuperation and retreat and how we connect to the universal. Planets here can ‘drown’ in collective emotions — difficulties with being grounded in the ‘real world’ often accompany a twelfth house stellium, as we may lack boundaries and easily make the emotions of others and of the collective our own. Outer planets in this house indicate the important task to access the collective consciousness, let go of past trauma, and channel our unique understanding of transpersonal trends into greater spiritual service. As the twelfth house meets the Ascendant, planets close to the Ascendant will vividly colour our outer personality and invite us to show our private, hidden personality aspects to the greater public.

Higher Wisdom Of The Twelfth House

Home to both the personal and the collective unconscious, nowhere are we closer to the potential for spiritual transcendence, ego dissolution, unconditional love and profound compassion. The twelfth house is at once watery, mutable and universal, extremely porous and permeable, and is the ultimate destination for spiritual enlightenment and personal transcendence. We must not mistake its boundlessness and uncertainty for weakness — this is where ‘one is all, and all is one’, one of the most powerful wisdoms we can attain during our brief human existence.
