Crumbling Foundations
Pluto transits are ruthless imperatives — “evolve or die!”. All life is growth; if we do not grow, we die. Pluto squaring our natal Pluto, at its essence, constitutes our midlife crisis. Yep — that deeply uncomfortable slice in the pie of time in which our sense of personal sovereignty is shaken to the very core. As cemented foundations crumble, hidden hurts vividly re-emerge, and suppressed fears creep up on us, we are compelled to come to terms with our personal sense of power. This transit generally occurs between the age range of 36 to 60, depending on our year of birth and the respective sign our natal Pluto resides in (due to Pluto’s tilted orbit, far-reaching exceptions occur). The volcanic eruptions we now experience on a personal level may disorient or overwhelm us, forcing our hand, shifting our perspective and teaching us humility in regards to our powerlessness in face of greater cycles. Forced to rely on our inner resources, emotional stability, and ability to nurture ourselves, this transit demands staunch resilience and undying faith in our ability to re-invent ourselves. If it is any consolation: those who share our age are exposed to the demands of this deep inner shift, too. Each generation reaches a stage where old structures and ways of being are eliminated. Now it is our turn.
I speak in detail about Pluto transits in my new book: Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.
Inner Construction Work
Pluto brings upheaval and crisis, clearing away and restructuring so that — ultimately — our original seed may continue to transform and flourish. For most people, this ‘midlife crisis’ is a time of breakdown or breakthrough. Previously hidden agendas — our own, those of others, and those motivating movements on a collective scale — now rise to the surface. Pluto makes heavy demands of us, yet its ultimate goal is to lighten our load. When we are at the brink of death, we are also closest to our sense of being alive. Similarly, the process of giving birth cannot be fulfilled without feeling pain. As Jung stated, ‘free will is doing gladly what we have to do’, and so perhaps our submission to the process is at the core of what is required to navigate this transit. The renewed vigour that eventually emerges after acceptance and full integration compels us to re-design and delineate our new identity and territory, claiming it and making it ours. Thus, beneath pain, loss, and burnt ashes, the incubation of new life awaits us.
What is True Power, Then?
The pursuit of pleasure, position and wealth, emotional security in relationships and family, or even a set of beliefs and a code of morality – all of this is better seen as temporary activities of a curious mind and a restless soul. They all pass away because they offer no peace. During this transit, we will come to find that the soul yearns for peace and remains restless until we find our place in life. Yet that place is an inner condition, not only a set of outer circumstances. It is Pluto's gift to us to keep us moving forward through the struggles until we realise the truth that peace is the soul's condition and we will struggle through life until we happily surrender to this wisdom. This transit marks a definite turning point or crisis in which we are forced to make important decisions and commitments that accommodate movement, change and evolution. Indeed, Pluto is the bringer of sacredness, beauty and wonder, since without change we could not know awe. Along this process, the key words are courage and confidence — action with assertiveness and intention thus takes central importance.
Pluto Square Pluto: Some Wisdom To Go
The planet Pluto offers us the path of both power and powerlessness; it encapsulates the frightening consequences of the ego and a personal will divorced from compassion. Yet ideally, knowing that our external environment will only resist us further if we resist, Pluto teaches us to practise profound acceptance. The purpose of Pluto square Pluto is to remind us of our spiritual heritage, our zest for life, our unlimited potential and deep inherent wisdom. While often extraordinarily disruptive, unwelcome and even feared, the inner shifts experienced and the events attracted are extremely vitalising influences, which bring us back on track whether we like it or not. Nothing we experience, or ever could experience, is more than an outer reflection of who we are inwardly. Blame itself is only evidence of denial. Life itself is a mirror and all we get is all we are. When we resist life, then we create resistance; when we accept life then we create acceptance. In order to validate this counter-intuitive teaching, we must first claim freedom. Without freedom we are constrained by forces of control. These seem imposed and external but they are not. We must resist the impulse to resist, and allow the flow to flow through us. Freedom expresses faith and attracts vitality, joy, peace and wisdom.
