The Moon: Archetype & Symbolism

Enigmatic, obscure and elusive, the Moon in Tarot softly illuminates our subconsciousness. This card beckons us to explore our shadow self, our illusions, and the intuitive realms of our psyche — it is a symbol of intuition, the unconscious, and the labyrinthine landscape of our dreams. The Moon serves as a reminder that beneath the surface of our everyday reality lies a vast expanse of thoughts, feelings, and intuitions waiting to be explored. It is also signals a need for discernment in the face of illusions and deception, as its mystical glow can distort our perception. We are urged to listen to our instincts, question appearances and seek clarity amid ambiguity. We should also cultivate an awareness of cycles: a full moon in the night sky is potent for implementation and celebrating successes, while a dimly lit moon crescent reminds us to plant the seeds required, even if no one sees or watches us.

The traditional Rider Waite Tarot card shows the Moon flanked by two white towers, hinting at the path to higher consciousness and the requirement for self-purification before this path is to be trodden. Below the tower, we see a dog, a wolf, and a crab. The dog and the wolf represent both the tamed and the wild aspects of our animal minds, and symbolise the several stages involved in the early stages of consciousness unfolding. The little crab in the water, almost melting into the sea, is a symbol of Cancer and the Moon in astrology, and shows the earliest, most rudimentary and instinctual stage of our development, reminding us to never forget where we came from.

The Moon: Advice, Lesson, & Higher Wisdom

Particularly attuned to the planetary symbolism of the Moon and Neptune in astrology, the Moon awakens our intuitive faculties. It teaches us that nothing is what it seems — we often only have half of the information needed and are now highly encouraged to listen to the whispers of our soul. This is easier said than done. The soul’s voice is quiet, and requires focus, discernment, clarity and self-awareness to access. A first step is listening to our intuition, helping us to see beyond what is in front of us. Feeling into situations rather than thinking what they mean as well as letting go of our conscious mental blocks or negative self-talk will slowly allow our intuition into our conscious awareness to guide us. To access the soul’s higher level of understanding, we must honour our shadow, cyclically releasing outdated patterns and old aspects of ourselves to shed our skin and truly shine, even if initially alone in darkness.
