The Wheel of Fortune: Archetype & Symbolism

Everything changes. Dawn, dusk, hunger, satiety, spring, autumn - we learn early onwards in life, on a deep level, that things are always moving. Though seemingly trite, we humans generally do not adapt very well to this wisdom. The Wheel of Fortune teaches us, knowing that everything is change, that we can make it all up according to our own ways.We are free to change, or let go of what was important yesterday, and take up something better - that is the path of growth. We must come to terms with the ephemeral nature of life: there is no stability or duration. “When I have X position and Y relationship, then I’ll be happy.” No, you won’t! The best strategy is to live in the moment.

The Wheel of Fortune says ““this too shall pass”, reminding us not to get too lost in our successes, or our failures, for that matter. We are here to evolve, grow, become more courageous, energetic, cultivate a higher level of consciousness. Try new situations — intense situations! — so you grow. This requires non-attachment to outcome.

“Karma”

The Wheel of Fortune is often associated with karma, specifically the karma that we are “born with”. “Destiny is given to us by karma”, most interpretations of the Wheel of Fortune will have us say. Yet most interpretations of karma, sometimes called ‘original sin’, is profoundly negative, because it attributes us with guilt from the very beginning onwards. What a limiting view! This does not make us feel free - this makes us feel imprisoned, and is therefore wrong. We claim, affirm and practice freedom. Karma is the opportunity to do what we can to improve. Our destiny is what we create if we do not make another creative decision. Each decision (not vague preference) makes destiny.

The Wheel of Fortune: Advice, Lesson, and Higher Wisdom

Power that can be taken away isn’t real power. Fame, fortune and status - these are devices to blind you from real power, false on every level imaginable and an illusion, because they seduces the ego in believing in something that isn’t real. If you are bored, distracted, bullied, you are not powerful. What is real power? Soft power. Power is getting your own way — it is how you make your own destiny. Power that can be taken can be lost by the turn of the wheel of fortune. Power is being positive in the present moment, no matter the situation. We must find a life strategy that works despite everything changing - that is the key to durable power. So where can you put your faith, and invest your sense of security and identity? This strategy should not be attached to outer circumstances, but to an inner state of being. You can’t get it from life, nor from somebody else’s ideals. You can get it only from something that doesn’t change. This is the mystery of mysteries - the “I am” in you. Find what it is within yourself that you can have and hold and be that doesn’t change. Work out what that is. If I told you, I would rob you of this unique opportunity? What is your “I AM”?

The Wheel of Fortune teaches us that time, also, is a lie. Time is a device to slow down consciousness to understand that which takes us time to understand. Would we be evolved into a high level of consciousness where we would be able to see everything at the same time, we wouldn’t need time. We need time, because we are not at that level. We have to contemplate the past and anticipate the future as if it existed - yet the future and the past are just radiant expressions of the present. As such, in truth, only the present moment exists. We are incarnated into a world bound by time, structuring the mind’s thinking, even despite physicists's cleverness in understanding on a physical level. Yet we are here to be humans and live a human life.
