The Future of Nostalgia
Difficult to distinguish, yet decidedly firm in its hold over us, there lies a place deep within our memory and beneath our feet where all the whispers of all our ancestors blend into one strong wind and all the streams of past experiences flow into one river. This is where our most profound roots, our early childhood experiences, our physical and spiritual concept of home and our ties to the past fuse into one and the same current. Neptune in conjunction with the lowest point in our chart, the IC (Imum Coeli) is a rather strange transit — our roots and our family history now seem to be coloured in nostalgic, dream-like shades, as if we are looking at retro photographs of ourselves that speak of a different time and an older, long lost version of ourselves. Past ties may dissolve, or suddenly assume spiritual importance, guiding us towards a deeper and more creative understanding of what firmly grounds us in life. Transiting Neptune often blurs the boundaries between imagined narratives and emotional realities, so we are challenged to question the authenticity of our intimate ties, which may have functioned based on unrealistic ideals, attachments lacking clear boundaries, or self-deception for comfort. Lasting 1-2 years, this transit is the equivalent to Neptune opposite MC (Midheaven), which suggests that our career path and higher calling must accommodate this inner shift.
I speak in detail about Neptune transits in my new book: Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.
Re-Imagining Our Roots
Neptune in conjunction with our IC puts our home environment into focus — perhaps we lose ourselves in our current home or family environment or seek escape from its pervasive influence to re-conceptualise our career and higher goals. In its essence, we are asked to dissolve intergenerational, past or current family-related unclarity or trauma. More transpersonal themes may emerge — perhaps we feel compelled to revisit our family history or ancestry through family constellations or uncomfortable yet insightful conversations with relatives. This transit can unearth and bring to light unclear domestic arrangements which drain the energy of those involved, obscure narratives being spun to cover deceptive activities, or at its worst, sensitise us to instances of abuse or inappropriate boundaries having been crossed in the family environment. Whether parents, siblings or distant relatives are involved — we must understand that we have the ability to re-write the past by re-imagining it — not only our minds and hearts, but our cells listen to the narratives we tell us about ourselves. Resolving trauma releases us from a generational curse of re-iterative, toxic, or unproductive behavioural patterns that subconsciously shape our perceptions and hence the reality we imagine.
Inner Sanctuary, Higher Aspirations
Confronted with these themes, how do we rebuild and maintain an inner sanctuary of peace, faith, boundless imagination and unconditional love? Understanding that all that came before us — suffering, death, love, loss, forgiveness, deception, abuse, enlightenment — had to occur to conjure up our very existence. We now consciously position ourselves along this patterned tree, knowing that we have the power to break intergenerational patterns and redefine who our lineage is with the power of our heart and mind. All those who came before us will support us now, as if reaching out with their invisible arms from other dimensions, softly guiding us towards our higher calling. As this transit is the equivalent to transiting Neptune in opposition to our Midheaven, our career or aspirational goals likely shift as a result of this inner re-evaluation as well, and may demand more creativity and imagination in the forging of our path. Our inner base must act as a refuge, not a rigid determinant of our higher path.
