Waves of Change

Transits represent waves of change. They can be considered energy fields whose dynamic progress acts in a forward-backward-forward motion, comparable to the tidal ebb and flow of oceans upon the beach. Invariably shifting the focus of our lives, they can clearly be identified in the changes of our circumstances. These events tend to bring realisations, decisions of consequence, and the deepening of wisdom and often precede a period of re-evaluation of who we are.  While the potentials contained in our birth chart provide hints about the nature of events specific transits may trigger, it is more fruitful to maintain an open-minded attitude and focus on the fundamental lessons to be learned.

Although transits are known to trigger ‘events’, the definition of an event is amorphous and not limited to the physical realm. Transits also register on an inward level, experienced as a deep shift of outlook and attitude — to life, to others and to ourselves. Changing inner dispositions, shifting notions of self and the transformation of core beliefs are just as likely to occur as eventful external circumstances noticeable in our material and social environment. Indeed, these inner shifts are often more significant and provide key insights into the lessons we must integrate to move forward on our evolutionary journey.

Inner & Social Planet Transits

The transits of the inner planets — Moon, Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars — are felt for an approximate duration of 1-3 days and mark smaller turning points in our everyday lives. They allow us to anticipate themes that can dominate a certain day and provide clues about the nature of certain events or inner realisations that transpire during this short period of time. On a larger scale, they are not considered important unless they are part of a larger aspect configuration.

The transits of Jupiter and Saturn are usually felt for 2-3 weeks or 2-3 months respectively. Jupiter transits are often favoured and highly anticipated by astrologers for their reputation of lucky blessings, though at a deeper level, they simply magnify, expand and elevate that which already is. Jupiter brings hope and faith, encouraging us to reach beyond our usual boundaries and open ourselves to greater abundance in our lived experience. Saturn transits call for serious appraisal, soberness, long-term planning, acceptance of uncomfortable truths, and the re-establishment of structure and order in disorderly circumstances. Although Saturn tends to be the least popular of all planets, he nevertheless is fair — rewards will be given for hard work on our part.

Outer Planet Transits

As the slowest-moving planets, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto usually take at least one year to transit a particular planet or sensitive point in the chart. Retrogradation, featuring up to 5 hits, can extend the duration to 2-3 years. Announcing great inner and outer change in our lives, these transits are crucial to our personal development, urging along a process that is often felt to reach beyond personal control. When a transiting outer planet forms an aspect with two or more planets involved in a natal configuration, this transiting aspect pattern often triggers a cluster of events, deep realisations and lasting changes that mark key turning points in our lives.

A Uranus transit brings self-liberation and an unyielding hunger for freedom, a Neptune transit dissolves current narratives and constructs new imaginations as a path towards clarity, and a Pluto transit triggers an evolutionary shift of self-understanding at the deepest level. The house placements of the transiting planet and the natal planet being transited add further flavour to the themes that emerge during this time. When transiting Neptune, Uranus or Pluto form an aspect with two or more planets involved in a natal configuration, the aspect pattern being activated is experienced as particularly potent and often triggers, layered, strongly-felt complexity.

Assimilating Change

Each and every one of us goes through a process of self-evaluation as we encounter the reflection of self in worldly scenarios. Whether with family or friends, lovers, colleagues, and indeed alone against the world, we come eventually to understand that all outer experiences are somehow the resultant expression of who we are inwardly. During a major transit, or immediately afterwards as we reflect and assimilate the changes, our sense of self goes through a shuddering reorientation. We shake off much of the fluff, gloss and pretence as we delve deeper into our core beliefs and essence-self. This inner shift is, unsurprisingly, much more obvious to ourselves than to others, and a disconnect that separates us from what has been familiar and dependable can lead to confusion and temporary disillusionment. We begin to feel, perceive and think differently, yet those around us do not see this and treat us exactly as before. It is not surprising then that we feel the urge to let go of those who have no accommodation for our evolved manner of being. Home; career, relationships, interests, goals and beliefs are all subject to evaluation and review.

Without guidance or deeper understanding, this can often be a profoundly disorienting time, and requires proper self-knowledge and grounding techniques to stay above the water and derive the key lesson that is the true gift in disguise of a transit.
