PLuto in Aquarius Dates: March 23, 2023 — June 11, 2023; January 20, 2024 — September 1, 2024; November 19, 2024 — March 8, 2043

Pluto ingresses into Aquarius on March 23 in 2023, lingering in this maverick air sign a mere three months to give us a foretaste (or launch a pre-emptive strike) that will set the scene for the next two decades. Pluto represents transformation, evolution, power, and deep-seated changes, whereas Aquarius symbolises innovation, social progress, and collective ideals. Obliterating everything obsolete in its way, Pluto’s residency in this progressive yet markedly fixed sign will shift the collective psyche towards networks, communities, group consciousness, human/machine dichotomies, energy/frequency healing, environmental concerns, the morality of technology … and outer space! But we are not quite there yet: Pluto briefly retrogrades back into Capricorn twice, so expect unfinished business and any remaining skeletons in your closet to be cleared out and taken care of by the end of autumn of 2024.

What Happened The Last Time Pluto Was In Aquarius?

Pluto travelled through Aquarius between 1778 - 1798. The late 18th century witnessed great upheaval — as Enlightenment ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity took hold, revolutionary sentiments spread across Europe and the Americas. Fueling the desire for social change, this sparked movements for independence and self-governance all around the world. The most seminal events included:

  • the American Revolution (1775-1783), which led to the birth of the United States as an independent nation

  • the French Revolution (1789-1799), during which the monarchy was overthrown, and the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen was proclaimed, embodying the ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity

  • the patenting of the steam engine (1779), setting the stage for the Industrial Revolution and heralding a marked shift in society's relationship with technology

  • ideals of freedom, equality, and progress permeated the collective consciousness, laying the groundwork to redefine society’s concept of citizenship

Chat GPT // Pluto Says Hi

Fast forward to 2023. NASA plans to launch its first manned moon mission in 50 years by 2024 to prepare for the human exploration of Mars. There is currently a discussion whether computer gaming should be part of the Olympics. And now ChatGPT has entered the chat, gaining large scale traction early this year just as Pluto entered Aquarius the first time. Coincidence? I think not! This AI tool has undeniably revolutionised society within a short period of time, redefining our approach to work, knowledge, morality and self-governance. Yet the information we generate with this tool is sourced through an array of algorithms and a variety of selection criteria, challenging us to remain critical thinkers of how we create, source and consume information. The ongoing writers strike in the US calls for a redistribution and re-evaluation of power in response to this tool, putting human agency and worker’s rights at the forefront.

Pluto in Aquarius: Political Repercussions

Aquarius seeks to spread, disseminate, and connect. With Pluto entering the scene, this is true of power — a structural shift from conventional governments to the idea of ‘we the people’ will gain increasing traction, disruptively and transformatively impacting ways of governing on a global scale. Communities, constitutions and governments will progressively be encouraged to accommodate this redistribution of power, naturally reorganising themselves into entities that self-govern and self-regulate in the interests and wellbeing of everybody (coincidentally, this marks the cornerstone of the American constitution, signed during Pluto’s previous journey through Aquarius) or will be forced to do so —  in ruthless yet customary Pluto style. Alternatively, forms of totalitarian social control, facilitated by rigid technological surveillance, could restrict the freedom of the people on a collective scale. From incredibly speedy political polarisation to the sovereign bankruptcy of nations, from ruthless disdain of conservatism to hypocrisy and doublethink, this era encourages us to move from the foolishness of crowds to an outbreak of social wisdom.

Network Density // Power Cuts  // Polarisation

Links connect nodes in a network, which create, receive, or transmit information. Aquarius rules systems and networks, which means that networks of any kind, including energy and electricity, the Internet, virtual networks, sub-communities, clubs — even consciousness — will either densify or destruct when Pluto enters this sign. Manifesting entirely new concepts of ‘connection’, ‘togetherness’ and ‘community’, this new level of connection brings both opportunities and vulnerabilities: radical intelligence and misguided ideological fixation, creative friendship and informational overload, democratised knowledge and totalitarian social control. Power cuts and even broadband blackouts are a possible, forcing us to re-evaluate our dependencies on technology and energy production. Data transmission and redistribution — both human and non-human — will accelerate exponentially. The downside of this connectedness is incredibly speedy political polarisation — the online spread of misinformation, disinformation and deep fakes ask us to ponder the social ramifications of the act of ‘posting’ something online. When we disseminate information, we touch many people in the process and actively shape group consciousness.

Mind, Body, Cyborg

Consciousness is an information field. Healing through ‘unconventional’ means, such as light, colour or sound therapy, auric field scans and crystal protection from electromagnetic pollution will likely garner interest and could gain increasing scientific backing. Traveling long distances to attend curated retreats, designed to meditate, exercise and heal within a close-knit community, will become increasingly trendy through social media influencers. On the other hand, technological gadgets will experimentally begin to enter the human body. The cyborg has theoretically been born already, but has it lived? Enhancing the human condition by virtually cutting into the material, facilitating lightning-speed density of networking within our very own bodies, could see their beginnings in the form of scientific trials. Silicon Valley, transhumanist enthusiasts and the technological singularity club are going to feel right at home in this constellation. Big questions of technology and morality, human and non-human will spark debates in our society. Is machine intelligence working with or against our evolution? Will technological worship reach the point of human destruction? Is this technophile nirvana or a dystopian nightmare?

Human Spirituality, Alien Identity

With these revolutionary societal undercurrents, spiritual movements that have the selfless interest of the community at heart will begin to form. Consequentially, significant changes in spiritual leadership are possible, initiating a collective, unremitting drive towards a unification of humanity. Yet science is unlikely to capitulate to the encroachment of spirituality on its claim to power. As more people discover spirituality for themselves, the rigid belief that only scientific thinking is a valid paradigm and approach to guide decision-making for societal progress will be challenged. Yet the importance of this debate is obliterated with the impending discovery of hospitable zones in outer space. The increasingly viable reality of colonising extraterrestrial zones will have us asking far more important questions. Who are ‘we’, who are potential ‘theys’ — or is it in fact ‘us’? This change in consciousness surrounding the dichotomy between ‘terrestrial’ and ‘extraterrestrial’ is likely to redefine our view as a cohesive unit of humanity and our evolutionary trajectories for the future.

Endgame

Pluto either exposes or reinforces underlying patterns, secrets or possibilities, depending on human response to its pressures — yet the redistribution of power is certain in its residence in Aquarius. Above all, Pluto is our collective will: if anything, this transit instills in us the rigid belief in unlimited possibilities. What will we do with the potentials and powers we are given?
